TOUR DESCRIPTION
Prague is a city rich in literature and history, one
whose many stories are nestled together side by side. Located directly in the centre of Europe,
Prague has been an intersection for so many years
of the various competing forces of history,
which have given the city the unique character
we see today.
The city’s strange mix of beauty and brutality has
served as inspiration for creative individuals, and
Prague now boasts a rich literary and artistic
heritage, which reflects the complex history
of this tragic yet lyrical space.

This walking tour will take you to some
of the highlights of this city’s historical and literary spots. It starts in the New Town and works its way
to the centre, dropping you off not far from
Old Town Square. Follow in the footsteps of
Kundera / Hrabal / Kafka / K.H. Mácha,
visit the crypt where the Heydrich assassins were found, and learn why so many historical Prague citizens were thrown out of windows, not usually
by their own choice.
Tour costs 375 – 450 CZK per person.
Children under 12 go for free.

What will be covered on these tours?
Rudolf II attracted many great thinkers to Prague, although some of these were taking advantage of his generosity. In the 1590s, Prague was playing host to both talented fraudsters and legitimate scientists.
Karel Hynek Mácha is considered the greatest Czech Romantic poet. Nowadays the Czechs have a special Day of Love to celebrate him on the 1st May. However, the poetry itself is far more brutal.
Known for his love of beer, his cats, and his numerous jobs, Hrabal grew up at a brewery in a town called Nymburk. He later went on to become one of the greatest Czech authors of the twentieth century.
The First Defenestration occurred in the New Town, and was one of the triggers for the Hussite Wars. Led by followers of the preacher Jan Hus, it initiated Prague’s odd tendency for window-throwing.
The Surrealists dreamed of a new world, on both an artistic and political level. Prague artists shared in the dream. But the harsh realities of their era unleashed a violence they had not imagined.
In 1890, Prague set up the first school in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to allow women access to a higher education. One of their most famous students was a journalist called Milena Jesenská, who lived in Vienna.
Window-throwing became important again for the Bohemian Revolt in 1618. The conflicts in Bohemia would also trigger one of the largest wars in European history. Czech culture only narrowly survived.
RIP Kundera, who passed away this summer. But what did he do with his life? Before he went to France, Kundera was working as a lecturer at FAMU film school during the time of the Prague Spring.
The story of Heydrich’s assassination is well-known to history, yet it still deserves retelling over again. In WW2, Heydrich was the highest-ranking Nazi to be assassinated by any Resistance group.
